Between Fatalism and Chaos. The Event in the Philosophy of Léon Brunschvicg.

The Concept of a Self-Sufficiency Economy in Thailand.Aim-Orn Niranraj - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 29:99-108.
Between 1987 and 1997, Thailand experienced a bubble economy. When the bubble economy exploded in 1997, the country suddenly experienced an economic crisis: it was in heavy debt and became financially controlled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The problem was caused by the country’s desire to rapidly change itself from an agricultural country to an industrial one, without considering its own comparative advantage in that its climate and resources are more suitable for agriculture. Thailand also wanted to become a (...)

Can altruism be understood in terms of socially-discounted extrinsic reinforcement?Randolph C. Grace, Anthony McLean & Orn Bragason - 2002 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 25 (2):259-260.
Altruism can be understood in terms of traditional principles of reinforcement if an outcome that is beneficial to another person reinforces the behavior of the actor who produces it. This account depends on a generalization of reinforcement across persons and might be more amenable to experimental investigation than the one proposed by Rachlin.

  23. Properties and resemblance classes.David Manley - 2002 - Noûs 36 (1):75–96.
There are two major theories of properties that employ resemblance classes to avoid commitment to universals.1 Object-resemblance nominalism ~ORN! faces the notorious companionship and imperfect community difficulties, though some costly remedies have been proposed. Trope-resemblance nominalism ~TRN!, in contrast, is commonly supposed to avoid these difficulties altogether. My contention is that both versions of resemblance nominalism are subject to companionship and imperfect community difficulties. If I am right, ~1! trope theory loses one of its primary selling points, and ~2! resemblance (...)

A critical race analysis of structural and institutional racism: Rethinking overseas registered nurses' recruitment to and working conditions in the United Kingdom.Iyore M. Ugiagbe, Liang Q. Liu, Marianne Markowski & Helen Allan - 2023 - Nursing Inquiry 30 (1):e12512.
Language tests for overseas registered nurses (ORN) working outside their home country are essential for patient safety, as communication competency needs to be established in any workforce. We argue that the current employment of existing language tests is structurally and institutionally racist and disadvantages ORNs from non‐European Union (EU) and non‐White countries seeking to work in the United Kingdom. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT), we argue that existing English language tests for ORNs seeking registration in the United Kingdom are discriminatory (...)

  25. Rationality and the structure of memory.Christopher Cherniak - 1983 - Synthese 57 (November):163-86.
A tacit and highly idealized model of the agent's memory is presupposed in philosophy. The main features of a more psychologically realistic duplex (orn-plex) model are sketched here. It is argued that an adequate understanding of the rationality of an agent's actions is not possible without a satisfactory theory of the agent's memory and of the trade-offs involved in management of the memory, particularly involving compartmentalization of the belief set. The discussion identifies some basic constraints on the organization of knowledge (...)

    Feminism and Aesthetics.Josephine Donovan - 1977 - Critical Inquiry 3 (3):605-608.
In response to the discussion between William W. Morgan and Annette Kolodny in the Summer 1976 issue of Critical Inquiry I would like to address the issue of separating judgments based on feminism as an ideology from purely aesthetic judgments. Peripherally this included the issue of "prescriptive criticism," so labeled by Cheri Register in Feminist Literary Criticism: Explorations in Theory.1 In the same book, as Kolodny points out,2 I called for criticism that exists in the "prophetic mode." Kolodny indicates reservations (...)

Secrets of the Couch and the Grave: The Anne Sexton Case.Edmund D. Pellegrino - 1996 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 5 (2):189.
In 1991, Diane Wood Middlebrook, a professor of English at Stanford University, published a biography of the poet Anne Sexton in which, among other things, she used as source material some 300 tapes of Sexton's psychotherapeutic sessions with her psychiatrist, Dr. Martin Orne. After some years of reluctance and with the concurrence of Sexton's daughter and literary executor, Linda Gray Sexton, Orne released the tapes to Professor Middlebrook. Middlebrook's picture of Sexton drew heavily on the tapes, supplemented by scrapbooks, letters, (...)

Geography and the production of space in nineteenth-century American literature.Hsuan L. Hsu - 2010 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
In Geography and the Production of Space in Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Hsuan L. Hsu examines how literature represents different kinds of spaces ranging from the single-family home to the globe. He focuses on authors such as Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville and Sarah Orne Jewett, who drew on literary tools such as rhetoric, setting, and point of view to mediate between individuals and different kinds of spaces. These authors used forms such as the regional sketch, the domestic (...)

Maidens in Greek Architecture : The Origin of the « Caryatids ».Ione Mylonas Shear - 1999 - Bulletin de Correspondance Hellénique 123 (1):65-85.

The Turing degrees below generics and randoms.Richard A. Shore - 2014 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 79 (1):171-178.
If X0and X1are both generic, the theories of the degrees below X0and X1are the same. The same is true if both are random. We show that then-genericity orn-randomness of X do not suffice to guarantee that the degrees below X have these common theories. We also show that these two theories are different. These results answer questions of Jockusch as well as Barmpalias, Day and Lewis.

    The Quest for Self-Control. [REVIEW]A. G. D. - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (4):744-744.
This well organized and interesting anthology concerns the image of the self-directed individual as replaced by a deterministic model of his behavior. Since legal, personal-social, and religious institutions still see man as self-controlled and therefore responsible, Mr. Klausner views this replacement as particularly troublesome. The first third of the book is predominantly historical and draws from an extremely tolerant range of sources including yoga, philosophy, psychology, hypnosis and self-help publications. The remainder of the volume is psychological and sociological, with emphasis (...)

Fictional women physicians in the nineteenth century: The struggle for self-identity. [REVIEW]Nancy C. Elder & Andrew Schwarzer - 1996 - Journal of Medical Humanities 17 (3):165-177.
By the late nineteenth century, there were large numbers of women physicians in the United States. Three Realist novels of the time,Dr. Breen's Practice, by William Dean Howells,Dr. Zay, by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps andA Country Doctor, by Sarah Orne Jewett, feature women doctors as protagonists. The issues in these novels mirrored current issues in medicine and society. By contrasting the lives of these fictional women doctors to their historical counterparts, it is seen that, while the novels are good attempts to (...)
